In 1977, NASA attached a gold-plated record to the side of the Voyager 1 spacecraft. It contained greetings in dozens of languages, the sounds of birds and whales, and a selection of Earth’s music, including a song by Blind Willie Johnson.

If an intelligent alien civilisation ever finds Voyager, one of the first voices it may hear from Earth will be his.

Johnson’s life gave little hint that such an honour awaited him. Born into poverty in Texas in 1897, he lost his mother while still a child and was blinded when, during an argument, his stepmother threw lye into his face. He spent much of his life poor, singing on street corners and outside churches. There were no concert halls, no fame and little money.

Yet from that hard life came music of astonishing depth. Johnson’s slide guitar seems to groan and sing at the same time, while his voice sounds as though it has travelled a great distance before reaching the listener. His recording of ‘Dark Was the Night (Cold Was the Ground)’ has almost no words at all—only moans and humming, a sound of loneliness and longing that somehow needs no translation.

Perhaps that is why it was chosen for Voyager. The song feels older than language itself. It sounds human.

Johnson died in 1945 in poverty after his house burned down and he was forced to sleep in its ruins. He could never have imagined rockets, space probes or interstellar travel.

And yet today, while every person who knew him is gone, his music is moving beyond the edge of the Solar System at more than 35,000 miles an hour.
